  Celestial Spheres

This work has evolved out of previous explorations in glass casting. As always, my inspiration is astronomical and I see echoes of orbital paths, planetary bodies and gravitational pull in the ellipses, spirals, arcs, cones and spheres that populate my sculpture.

For years I have been an artist working in two related but separate disciplines. As a glassblower I would make vessels. As a glass caster I would make sculptural objects.Quite early on in my experiences with casting glass I began to use my glass blowing skills to make inclusions, which I could suspend inside my castings. In recent years I began experimenting with the idea of blowing glass forms, which I later packed in sand and filled with glass. This approach allows me to introduce colour and decoration into my sculptural work. It also allows me to manipulate not just the form of my castings but also what is happening inside of them.

I am a bit of a space nerd and read quite a bit on the subjects of astronomy, cosmology and planetary sciences. The more I learn about these subjects the more I see our universe revealed in the simple geometry of circles, ellipses, spirals, arcs, spheres and layers. These structures are evident on all scales too, from the unimaginably tiny whirling of electrons in atoms to the majestic circling of planets around the sun and the interaction of galaxy clusters.
