I enjoy the layering of time, its slow movement of growth, the changes deep within the psyche, and I see these aspects of life in the colour field and abstract expressionist painters, Mark Rothko, Goothard Grayner, Clyfford Still, Philip Guston. In my painting I use many layers of medium and paint, building a history of colour and movement across the canvas.

I am fascinated by the ravages of time:
disintegration, decay, rust, corrosion, accretions, patinas, fossilization, the return to the skeletal, everything that tells the story of life. As a result I am attracted by the work of artists such as Antoni Tapies, Albert Burro, Herman Nitsch. In my own work I deal with surfaces and textures, reproducing the effects of time with such things as crackle and sand, I burn paper and use materials such as copper so that I can create patinas.

I find life elegant even in its decay. I strive to capture a small part of that elegance in my paintings.
