Dimensional Dream
This series of work evolved out of my travels and residency in Australia. It is about my discovery of a deep physical bond to the land and the experience of being spiritually connected to some indigenous concepts. One concept of this work is to use the meditative and dream states as a source of inspiration and imagery. It is also informed by my metaphysical interests, specifically the use of sacred geometry and other symbolic languages, which have evolved in this work. Archetypal Aboriginal imagery and the elements of nature are also informing sources.
Two main themes emerge in these paintings. The first theme concerns the intent to provide a context for connection and awareness of the earth as a living entity. These “Earth Connection” pieces have been evoked by memories of traveling the land. The second theme involves “Signs and Symbols” and the investigation of various levels of consciousness potentially induced by the viewing of specific symbols. These symbols are used to evoke a sense of non-lineal time and multi-dimensional realities - including the experience of unified consciousness. These levels of information are conveyed by layering images on the canvases.
The feeling of a strong alliance with the red earth energies awoke a desire in me to share this with others.Just as Aboriginal artists paint their own dreamings, some of my paintings are “maps” of my own journey dreamings. I reinterpret and reinvent traditional Aboriginal symbology as they speak to the heart and mind of someone raised in a western culture. These paintings may hold and transmit essences of ancient sites and are intended to instill energetic resonance with viewers.
The idea of the universality of symbols of creation is of interest to me.As in a recent series, this work also expresses this concept through the use of sacred geometry and the five elements associated with each shape. These shapes, along with other coded symbols and colour are infused into the work to support predominant themes.
The studio process involves gestural, intuitive and formal components.Multiple layerings, high colour, patterning, transparency and reflective surfaces are physical qualities of this work.In the Earth themed pieces, the body of Australia is first prepared with ochre paints and glazing. This is then layered with various images and the subtle use of interference paints which activate the surface to support shifts in perception. As the images are placed on the land they radiate out to the waters or sky which transmits the messages around the world. With these “Song Lines” I attempt to support the theme of a multi-dimensional consciousness. My hope is that viewers will
sense and feel this experience.
