Mitsu Ikemura, nowa resident of Victoria, was born in Japan. He studied architecture and practiced as an architectfor 20 years, in Kyoto, Japan, then as an urban designer in Toronto and Edmonton after emigrating to Canada in 1974.
In 1986 he embarked a new career working as a visual artist.Since that time he has been very active, and had received accolades from his peers and the community. To date he has had 24 solo exhibitions, participated 15 group shows, completed 6 public art commissions as well as 3 corporate commissions and 3 private commissions. In addition to the attention he has received from the media in the form of news paper reviews, he has also spotlighted on a feature of “Sunday Arts Entertainment” (CBC TV) in 1993 and was interviewed by Peter Gzowski on “Morningside” (CBC Radio) in 1989.
His artworks are richly layered visions of so-called “inner landscapes”. They are semiabstract works; their colourful and energetic forms and movement evoke certain images and draw the viewers’ attention but are not confined to any one representation or interpretation. In this way, a dialogue is set up between artist and viewer. Some works are reminiscent of prairie landscapes and Rocky mountains where he has spent great deal of his years in Canada, others are more mythical and spiritual landscapes. He oftentimes derives inspiration from the music of Bach and Mozart, incorporating their rhythms and harmonies into his works. He seeks to search out the universal factor within his inner visions. And with his sceneries he hopes to stir the viewers’ imagination and cause people to contemplate and reflect on themselves.Since 1990 he has been exploring the possibilities in three dimensional artworks, creating hanging sculptures. He has completed five successful commissions in this medium.
